In space conditions, the highly pathogenic bacteria Enterobacter bugandensis becomes even more dangerous due to its smart mutation skills.
Thirteen strains of E. bugandensis from the International Space Station were found mutated and distinct compared to their Earth counterparts.
The researchers found out that bacteria from the ISS had more genes connected to important functions, such as the transport of amino acids. They also noticed several new genes that were only present in bacteria found on the ISS and not on Earth. It suggests that these bacteria may have adapted to space conditions to survive.By using the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database, they searched for antibiotic-resistant genes.
As stated in the study, certain organisms utilized combinations of these mechanisms to gain resistance against the antibiotics. They noticed that some types of bacteria benefited more from E. bugandensis than others. This meant that E. bugandensis may have been important for maintaining the balance of the bacterial community on the ISS.
