A solider wears a U.S. Space Force uniform during a ceremony for U.S. Air Force airmen transitioning to U.S. Space Force guardian designations at Travis Air Force Base, California, Feb. 12, 2021.The two are often confused and - incorrectly - used interchangeably.

Space Command: “Actively employs joint forces from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force to accomplish the command’s mission.”a high-level group typically made up of different military branches that are responsible for specific geographic areas. There are 11 Combatant Commands, including Cyber Command, Central Command, Special Operations Command and Strategic Command. For Space Command, feeder commands are Army Space and Missile Defense Command , Marine Corps Forces Space Command, Navy Space Command, Air Forces Space and Space Forces Space. Space Command’s geographic coverage is the Karman line, the internationally recognized point where Earth’s atmosphere ends and outer space begins, to the moon and beyond.Space Force: “Organizes, trains and equips space professionals and then presents those forces to U.S. Space Command and other Combatant Commands.” What that means: Space Force was established in 2019 as a separate branch of the U.S. military under the U.S. Air Force, much in the way Marines are a branch of the military but part of the Navy. Space Force’s main goals are to train and equip space personnel to protect and provide capabilities in space for the U.S. and its allies. Space Force is based the Pentagon in Virginia but it operates a primary field command at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
