Soyuz leaks could keep astronauts on the space station for a year

The Russian space agency had planned a Feb. 19 launch of a spacecraft to replace one that sprang a leak last year. But that plan is now on hold after a second Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft sprang a leak.

Earlier this week, after discovering the second leak on a Russian cargo ship that does not fly people, Russian space agency officials said they were pushing the launch of the replacement craft to March to give them additional time to investigate the problem.

Now that two spacecraft have had similar problems within months of each other, NASA officials and their Russian counterparts are confronting new questions about what caused the leaks, if they are related and whether the replacement ship might also have a similar problem.
