WATCH | Soweto residents benefit from Phelophepa Healthcare Train stop at Dube Station

Soweto residents have come out in numbers to access services from the Phelophepa Health Train currently stationed at the Dube Station. The train has 19 coaches and is set to provide services including dental and eyecare, as well as screening for diabetes and cancer. Some services will be free and others will be charged at subsidised rates.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Health and Transnet. Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, Johannesburg Major Kabelo Gwamanda and other government officials welcomed the train on 10 October. Most of the services are for free. If you need to pay, it will be a small amount of money. We do pap smear; we do screening for diabetes, high blood and eye . In fact, it is a hospital in a train.

As early as 07:00, people lined up outside the Dube Station. When News24 visited, one patient, Lindelwa Makwabe, told this publication that she was there for the second day in a row because she had not been assisted on the previous day. They must come early because there are many of us and everybody needs to be assisted. Yesterday I was here but didn't get assisted. I wasn't discouraged, I'm back here again and I'm being assisted.

On the day of the launch, a group of patients in wheelchairs were given hygiene packages, food hampers and other supplies. Phaladi Tsole was one of the beneficiaries. Tsole said:"I'm happy for the blanket I received and the hygiene package. I'm also told there is a possibility of a new wheelchair for me."Over the years, the Phelophepa Health Train has become a boon for impoverished and under served communities that can't afford healthcare. The train will be parked in Soweto until 20 OctoberWho we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
