In an interview with Town & Country, Republic CEO Graham Smith criticized the upcoming increase in the Sovereign Grant, the public funds that support King Charles's monarchy. He argued that this money should be directed towards essential public services like schools, hospitals, and police instead of increasing royal expenditures. Last year, the UK government announced a substantial rise in the Sovereign Grant, from 86.
3 million to 132 million British pounds (about $108 million to $165 million) in 2025. This increase was attributed to the Crown Estate's successful investments, particularly in wind power. While a palace spokesman stated that the funding would be reviewed in the 2026-27 parliamentary session, the current surplus will be allocated to the royal household. The Sovereign Grant report released in July revealed that a significant portion of the funds will be used for ongoing renovations of Buckingham Palace. This 10-year renovation project, initiated in 2017, aims to cost 369 million British pounds (about $461 million). Despite being on schedule, the renovations have encountered unforeseen challenges. Last year, a report by the UK's National Audit Office revealed that 65% of the project budget had already been spent due to unexpected asbestos and structural damage.
