Southwest Airlines has named former US Airways CEO Rakesh Gangwal as its new independent chair of the board of directors.shortly after activist investor Elliott Investment Management disclosed a stake in the Dallas-based airline and called on the company to make board changes. Previously, Southwest’s board was led by former executive chairman Gary Kelly,
“We are embarking on the next era of change at Southwest as we build upon its many successes and storied past,” Gangwal said in a release. “Our critical priority as a newly constituted board is to come together to work closely with Bob Jordan and the rest of the management team to return the carrier to superior financial performance.
