Southwest Airlines has landed a deal with Archer Aviation to explore electric air taxis in California.
has signed an agreement with Archer Aviation to develop operational plans for electric air taxi networks at the California airports the Dallas-based air carrier flies at.
Archer Aviation is a California-based eVTOL manufacturer. eVTOL stands for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Southwest currently operates at 14 airports in California and would work with Archer to initiate operations that would involve key labor unions, like the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, which represents Southwest’s pilots.is designed to replace a 60 to 90 minute commute by car with a 10 to 20-minute electric air taxi flight.
Many eVTOL companies have been in discussions with airports around the globe and air carriers as the technology advances and becomes more popular.“It seems like a long distance for, say, an all-electric aircraft or a hydrogen-powered aircraft to catch the market space that we play in narrowbody,” Jordan said in December. “Doesn’t mean it won’t happen eventually.”Dallas Love Field sees long lines Thursday after bag machine issue, Aviation Reporter.
