Calls are being made for a 'phased' approach to reopening the iconic structure
A concession holder at Southport pier has spoken of being left “adrift” following the release of reports into its condition.
Most affected by the pier’s ongoing closure is a family-owned business which runs the concessions along the pier including its cafes and pavilion. Posting earlier today on the Southport Pier Pavilion Facebook page, the reaction was one of anger. The post added that the council’s rent suspension “means nothing” stating: “You’ve stopped our right to earn a living and forced us to survive on fresh air.”He said that while there were obvious serious issues with the pier, the inspection reports suggested a phased approach was possible.
“Having now received a fuller report from their consultants, they are bound to act on advice received.” “Such an approach which prioritises those issues that cause public risk could commence immediately without the hopeful wait for funding to appear from elsewhere. The next step must be for Council Officers to spell out a programme of works that prioritises the need to facilitate safe public access. We need a timetable that works for everyone.”Cllr Prendergast said: “I am grateful for Sefton Council making the full survey publicly available.
He claimed the council “does not regard Southport Pier as a priority” stating that a phased approach “would seem a far preferable option to leaving the pier shut, for a prolonged period of time, when it could potentially fall into a worse state than it is now.”
