Authorities are now investigating following an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Friday afternoon. According to the Houston Police Department, it all started with a robbery in progress call in the 5100 block of Almeda at a Family Dollar.
Officials said there was a male suspect who had stolen some items from the store just before 3:30 p.m. As he was leaving the store, officials said the suspect pulled out a knife and threatened the employees at the store. Officers arrived on the scene within three minutes. Officials said they saw the suspect traveling westbound over the Southmore Bridge. That's when officers confronted the suspect, was told to stop, and the suspect ran away. The suspect then saw other officers nearby and turned back toward the first officer that was giving commands to stop. That's when, officials said, the officer, who has been with the department for three and a half years, fired one time. The suspect, who is described as a Black male, approximately 30 to 40 years old, fell to the ground, and officers rendered aid. Officials said the suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. The officer involved was not injured in the shooting. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released by authorities.
