Southern California Edison faces multiple lawsuits alleging its equipment sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, one of the most destructive wildfires in California history. The lawsuits, filed on behalf of those affected by the fire, claim SCE infrastructure was energized at the time of the blaze.

A California utility company, Southern California Edison (SCE), is facing a wave of lawsuits alleging that its equipment ignited the Eaton Fire, one of the most destructive blazes that erupted last week and continues to burn in the Los Angeles area. Four lawsuits were filed on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, each accusing SCE of starting the fire.

The lawsuits represent homeowners, renters, business owners, and others who suffered property damage from the Eaton Fire in the Pasadena region. The Eaton Fire alone has scorched over 14,000 acres, destroyed more than 2,700 structures, and tragically claimed the lives of 15 people. At least 24 fatalities have been reported since multiple fires ignited last Tuesday, displacing over 90,000 residents who have been forced from their homes. Authorities have also reported over two dozen missing persons. The Eaton Fire, burning in the foothills east of Los Angeles, ranks as the second most destructive wildfire in California history, according to one of the complaints filed. The lawsuits cite numerous eyewitness accounts and images appearing to show a fire at the base of a SCE transmission tower before powerful Santa Ana wind gusts rapidly spread the flames. They further allege that Edison infrastructure in the area remained energized at the time of the fire. Last Wednesday, Southern California Edison issued a statement claiming that its distribution lines immediately west of Eaton Canyon had been de-energized well before the reported start time of the fire. An SCE spokesperson expressed empathy for the affected communities and pledged continued support during this challenging time. They emphasized that SCE crews, contractors, and mutual assistance partners are diligently working to safely restore power to customers. The spokesperson acknowledged receiving a complaint regarding a lawsuit related to the Eaton fire and stated that SCE would review it. They also affirmed that the fire's cause remains under investigation. Following the news, Edison International's shares plummeted almost 12% to $57.24 on Monday, marking a decline of approximately 27% since the fires erupted last week.
