A 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' warning has been issued for Southern California as a potent Santa Ana wind event is expected to bring dangerous fire conditions. Strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions create a high risk of rapid fire growth, prompting authorities to mobilize resources and issue warnings.
A rare Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) warning has been issued for Southern California as a powerful and potentially damaging Santa Ana wind event is expected. The National Weather Service (NWS) announced the PDS warning will be in effect in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, commencing Monday at noon and lasting until Tuesday at 10 a.m. Weather officials predict the strongest winds will occur Monday afternoon and will develop rapidly throughout the day.
A red flag warning will also be in effect from 8 a.m. Monday until 2 p.m. Tuesday. The NWS stated that winds will originate in the mountain areas of LA County and spread into coastal areas and valleys by evening, reaching into Tuesday. Humidity levels are anticipated to be extremely low, even dipping into single digits at some points. The combination of dry conditions and strong winds will create an extreme fire danger. Winds in the mountains and foothills are projected to range from 35 to 50 mph with isolated gusts between 60 and 80 mph. The NWS warned, 'If fire ignition occurs, conditions are favorable for extreme fire behavior and rapid fire growth, which would threaten life and property.'Los Angeles County areas of greatest concern include Calabasas and Agoura Hills, the Santa Clarita I-5 Corridor, and the Western San Fernando Valley. In Ventura County, the areas of most concern are Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard, and the Ventura County mountains. Additionally, the Western Santa Monica mountains are under a high wind warning. The NWS has also issued a high wind warning for Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning for Ventura and parts of Los Angeles counties. Damaging winds could cause downed power lines and trees, potentially leading to widespread power outages as winds intensify. Weather officials advise residents to stay in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. They also recommend securing any large objects outside that could become airborne and cause damage. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Sunday that he was mobilizing and prepositioning more than 130 fire engines, water tenders, and aircraft to Southern California in anticipation of the fire weather. This action follows two weeks after wildfires fueled by strong Santa Ana winds ravaged the region. Governor Newsom stated, 'The recent firestorms in Los Angeles have illustrated the importance of being in the right place at the right time. By strategically placing specialized personnel and equipment in areas prone to wildfires, crews are able to respond faster and more aggressively.' Firefighters are still battling the Eaton and Palisades fires as this next windstorm approaches. Cal Fire has also taken action, positioning over 790 firefighting personnel, including 76 engines, who are ready to respond if a blaze ignites
