A new 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' red flag warning has been issued for Southern California as high winds threaten to reignite the wildfire risk. The region is still recovering from last week's devastating fires.
Extreme fire conditions persist in Southern California as a fresh onslaught of high winds has prompted a 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' (PDS) red flag warning , according to weather officials. Following a week of devastating wildfires that ravaged thousands of structures and stretched local firefighting resources to their limits, more wind is anticipated. A PDS red flag warning is in effect until noon Wednesday for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Regions like the San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Malibu Coast, Ventura County valleys, San Fernando Valley, and the 118/210 corridors could experience some of the strongest gusts. A standard red flag warning remains in effect for many of the same areas until 6 p.m. Wednesday. The combination of damaging northeast to east winds and low humidity levels will heighten the fire danger. 'We are essentially going to be under red flag warnings and extreme fire danger until we receive that much-needed rainfall, which is not currently on the horizon for Southern California,' stated CBS News Los Angeles Meteorologist Amber Lee. This classic Santa Ana wind event will bring moderate to strong gusts ranging from 55 to 70 mph, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS). While dangerous PDS red flag fire weather conditions are likely with this event early Tuesday morning into Wednesday morning, the NWS predicts that this wind event will not be as intense and destructive as last week's windstorm.Overnight, a few small brush fires ignited, including the Auto Fire in Ventura County. The blaze has scorched 56 acres while forward progress has been halted with 0% containment, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Flames were fueled by gusts averaging between 20 and 30 mph. Four water-dropping aircraft swiftly responded to provide assistance. Lee mentioned that as the week progresses, significantly cooler temperatures are expected. Weather officials urge residents near wildlands to remain vigilant in case of a fire outbreak and to be prepared for evacuation. The NWS provides residents with these safety tips: Limit the use of anything that could spark a fire; have multiple ways to receive evacuation information; and have a wildfire action plan ready. Los Angeles City Fire Chief Kristin Crowley stated that rapid response teams are strategically positioned across Southern California in areas of high concern. Local and state agencies have increased personnel following the Palisades and Eaton fires, which became some of the most destructive in the state, tragically claiming 24 lives.
