'Should taxpayers have some oversight into the county’s healthcare system?' Houston County Commissioner Brandon Shoupe asked Monday.
DOTHAN, Ala. - Should taxpayers have some oversight into the county’s healthcare system? Or should an unelected, self-appointing board be able to raise taxes, spend local tax dollars, and make major healthcare policy decisions with zero input from citizens?“Earlier today, the Houston County Commission a policy which dictates how it will recruit and appoint members of the Houston County Healthcare Authority,” Shoupe , the Houston County Commission Chairman, wrote in a release.
He explained that, in most cases, there are no real options other than reappointing the current board member.Shoupe believes this process leaves the people of Houston County with no real choice and allows the Healthcare Authority to run without accountability.Improve the makeup of the Healthcare Authority board to better reflect the hospital’s workforce and the general population of Houston County“For many years,” Shoupe said, “...the board was a club for men only.
“It seems the Authority prefers members with little medical knowledge to avoid being challenged on their decisions,” Shoupe said. “The good ol’ boy system is NOT what local healthcare needs,” Shoupe expressed. Instead, the Houston County Commission’s vision “is to have a hospital board that represents both the community and the hospital workforce.”
Southeast Health agreed with Shoupe’s description of how the appointment process works, saying: “The law requires the Houston County Health Care Authority to submit a slate of nominees to the Commission and the Commission is required to select from the slate presented to them.”
