South32, owner of the Hillside aluminium smelter, has stepped up to fix a ship loader at the port of Richards Bay as the resources group takes a proactive approach to navigating serious logistics issues.

Speaking to Fin24 this week, South32 CEO Graham Kerr said the ship loader which Transnet was responsible for maintaining had posed a challenge to South32's exports."We've essentially taken over the maintenance of that, to bring it up to speed," said Kerr. "It's a Transnet piece of kit," said Noel Pillay, South32's co-COO."But given our maintenance and engineering expertise, we got in, rebuilt that, and it's operating at record performance levels right now. And so those are the things that we're trying to do to work together to try to find solutions."Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
