One local family is raising awareness after their daughter needed transfusions because of a rare disease.
Blood donations help patients like 10-year-old Cathryn Martinez who has already endured so much. Her health started declining after the death of her stepfather in 2023. It began with bruises on her arm and calf which doctors initially diagnosed as anemia. By August 2024, Cathryn had more than 45 nodules across her body that became painful to the touch.In September 2024, after many hospital visits, Cathryn was diagnosed with Mixed Lobular, Septal Panniculitis, and severe anemia.
After all of that, Cathryn was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia and p-ANCA microscopic polyangiitis, the first pediatric case to ever be reported. She currently is undergoing a six-month chemotreatment along with numerous daily medications to help fight the illness.
