South Shore trains halted after train collides with dump truck

All South Shore trains were stopped after a four-car passenger train collided with a dump truck in Gary on Monday morning.South Shore officials said the truck went around the crossing gates at 3rd Avenue and Rutledge Street, near Gary Metro Center Station, 200 W. Fourth Ave, at 7:43 a.m. Mark Terry, deputy chief of the Gary Fire Department, said the truck driver was not in the cab when the collision happened. Two passengers were taken to the hospital for injuries.

Terry said the train had 102 passengers, and the truck was empty at the time of the crash, which reduced the severity of the impact. 'These happen more frequently than we'd like,' Terry said. 'Only two people with minor injuries. The potential was much greater.'Trains 214 and 216 from Gary to Chicago were canceled, according to a service announcement posted just after 9 a.m. Train 214 was due at Chicago's Millenium Park station at 8:38 a.m.
