An officer with the South Salt Lake Police Department was taken into custody after allegedly going on duty while under the influence of alcohol. Michael Starley Hatch, 60, faces misdemeanor charges of DUI and carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence.
According to court documents, Hatch was reportedly driving a vehicle while on his patrol shift on Sunday night. A field training officer who was supervising at the time reported smelling alcohol coming from Hatch's breath. The field training officer notified his supervisors and brought Hatch back to the South Salt Lake Police Station.Driver accused of losing consciousness, driving into SLC auto parts store under influenceThe supervisor requested that every officer on duty submit a preliminary breath test. Hatch was allegedly the only one to test positive for alcohol. A deputy with Utah Highway Patrol was requested to investigate to avoid a conflict of interest. The deputy reported Hatch had "glossy" and "extremely bloodshot" eyes. When asked when he last had alcohol, Hatch said he had a pint of tequila the night before. Hatch allegedly failed a field sobriety test performed at the South Salt Lake station and had a breath alcohol concentration of .075% - .025% over the legal limit.
