Contractors broke ground in May 2023 with an expected completion date of Dec. 31, but the project finished weeks ahead of schedule. “It is beautiful, and it’s gonna make a huge difference for all the residents of this area,” said Bonney Irwin, a resident.
“We’ve waited a long time, but it’s taken a great effort.” Over the past few years, the city added a roundabout, sidewalk, turning lane, and drainage and sewage upgrades as part of the $25 million investment aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Former Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the early completion was particularly welcome during the holiday shopping season. “It has been so disruptive to so many people, but now with the Christmas shopping going on, the holiday season, because of all the merchants that are at either end of McGregor, I’m just really happy for them and for the commuters,” Stimpson said. “It’ll cut so much time off of just being in traffic.”“What I’m thankful for is we have so many great people who have been doing it and have been doing it well, and are just setting me and the city of Mobile up for success,” Cheriogotis said. During construction, commuters had to use alternate routes and cut through residential neighborhoods to reach their destinations. “It’s going to be really good for me and all of the residents that are tired of the traffic coming through the back way,” Irwin said.1.5M bags of shredded cheese sold at Target, Walmart, Aldi and more being recalled for possible metal fragmentsMeth found hidden on car hauler following I-10 traffic stop, Harrison Co.
