In South Lanarkshire, it has been reported that there’s been an 18-fold rise in disposable vapes from January 2021 to April 2022.

South Lanarkshire councillors have welcomed the progress that’s been made to target youth vaping after branding it an ‘epidemic in schools’.

In May this year, the council passed a motion to combat the use of disposable vapes amongst underage people which outlined a number of steps it would take to raise awareness of the issue and work with different partners to tackle the problem.Councillor Mark McGeever , welcomed the progress and thanked schools for working hard to try to prevent youths from vaping.

“I know schools continue to do everything they can to protect children from these products and young people from harm, and I look forward to the committee seeing further information about that in due course, but just to thank everyone for the work today.”It has also emphasised the use of schools in raising awareness of the dangers of disposable vapes and has dedicated workers to promote the use of new learning materials as well as e-learning training courses for staff.

She said: “I’m glad to see the work that’s been started on this since the motion I seconded at full council in May. I have to say I am still a wee bit disappointed that to date, we’re still not any further forward with the communication to the schools. Council officers stated that they are working closely with public health to create posters and campaigns for schools and want to focus on raising the health impact and trying to encourage children to make informed decisions when it comes to vaping.
