A teacher in South Korea has confessed to stabbing an eight-year-old student to death at an elementary school. The incident has raised concerns about a recent increase in violent crime in the country.

A teacher in South Korea tragically stabbed an eight-year-old student to death at an elementary school on Monday. Local media outlets, citing authorities, reported the horrific incident. The teacher, a woman in her 40s, confessed to the crime after police officers discovered her and the young victim with stab wounds at the elementary school in Daejeon, a central city in South Korea .

According to Yonhap news agency, the girl was transported to the hospital in an unconscious state but sadly succumbed to her injuries. A local fire department official confirmed to Reuters that she sustained stab wounds to her neck and face. The teacher also had stab wounds on her neck and arm, which authorities believe may have been self-inflicted.Yonhap reported that police investigations revealed the teacher had previously taken a leave of absence due to depression and returned to the school late last year. At the time of the attack, the student was at the school for after-class child care before attending a private art class. The teacher and the girl were found by police around 6:00 pm after the child's parents reported her missing from the art class. The teacher underwent surgery for her wounds, and police stated they would resume questioning her at a later time. This incident has shaken the nation, highlighting a concerning rise in violent crime in South Korea. The country is generally considered safe, with a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, below the global average. However, 2023 has witnessed a string of high-profile violent incidents, including several stabbings. In July, a person was killed and three others injured in a stabbing at a subway station in Seoul. The suspect, according to the BBC, claimed to have lived a miserable life and wanted others to suffer too. In August, a high school teacher was reportedly attacked with a knife in Daejeon, and in the same week, an attacker drove a car into a pedestrian walkway in Bundang, near Seoul, before attacking people at a department store with a knife. Police noted that the suspect in the Bundang attack had searched for news about the subway attack online before his rampage. Last year, South Korea's liberal opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck by an unidentified assailant during a visit to Busan
