South Korea's opposition parties have initiated impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol, with Strategic Analysis Australia Director Peter Jennings condemning his sudden and brief martial law declaration as a “disastrous move” which will see an end to his political career.
South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol’s decision to plummet the country into chaos by suddenly enacting a six-hour-long martial law will likely end his political career, according to a senior security expert, as the under-siege leader faces impeachment.
South Korea's President declared martial law on Wednesday about 12:30am AEDT to protect the country against"threats by North Korea's communist forces". The conservative leader was forced to lift his martial law just six hours later as the announcement triggered massive protests, calls for the leader to be arrested and chaotic parliamentary scenes.
“There really doesn't seem to be any basis to this other than the fact that President Yoon was being stymied by opposition parties in the South Korean legislative assembly,” he said. He accused the opposition of controlling the parliament after it cut about $4.4 billion from the government's budget plan which will reportedly impact budgets for the President's office, the prosecution, police and state audit agency.
