President Yoon reportedly said that he will lift martial law, hours after the country's parliament voted to veto the plan. Follow Newsweek's live blog.
The South Korean president has indicated that he would lift martial law merely hours after the country's parliament voted against the plan, Sky News reported. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared 'emergency martial law' earlier today, after accusing the opposition-led parliament of sympathizing with North Korea and crippling the administration through anti-state measures.
'I have accepted decision made by the National Assembly to dissolve and lift the martial law,' Yoon said in an address. People outside the National Assembly celebrated shortly after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared that martial law would be lifted, according to the AFP news agency. The agency also reported that Yoon said martial law soldiers had left after the National Assembly decided to prevent his installation of military control.
