Rickards, Braig and Thorp are all stepping up for Dragons

At a smaller school, or one with a lesser baseball program, Zach Braig might have been a two- or three-year starter.

“It’s definitely hard. We have so many good guys, and there are a bunch of guys on JV still who are dogs. You run out of roster spots and you can only put nine guys on the field, so it’s hard. You just have to stay ready and when your moment comes, you have to seize the moment.” Rickards went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the way in Saturday’s win. Braig added two hits, an RBI and a run, and Thorp reached twice with a single and a walk.“ might think we can’t hit as well, but we show them what we can do,” Rickards said. “We all know we can hit, and if the top is struggling or anyone else is struggling, we just want to get on base and help produce for the team and help us win.

“It happens all the time,” Braig said. “I remember last weekend I was up to bat and the coaches were saying, ‘It’s the eight hole, just throw him strikes.’ And I went 2-for-3. I don’t care, throw me fastballs. Being in the eight hole, I get a lot of fastballs and a lot of first-pitch hits, so I don’t mind it.”

“I did not get the surgery, just a lot of PT,” he said. “It feels good now. It was very tough , but I just put my heart out to the guys from the bench. I did my part from the dugout and cheered on the nine guys on the field and the hitters.” The N.J. High School Sports newsletter is now appearing in mailboxes 5 days a week.
