Ferrell Fellows’ two-story brick childhood home in South Oak Cliff was the place to be. Her family hosted all the pizza parties, sleepovers, birthday parties...
e, South Dallas has an issue with homeownership, which is among the worst in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, at 40%.
As a college student, Fellows learned what it was like to be on the other side of the spectrum. At 19, she found herself roaming the streets of New York City with a shopping cart full of her belongings after being kicked out of her shared apartment. Despite having a prestigious internship, she couldn’t afford a place to live.
“I just showed up home from work one day, just trying to be a good A student in business school, and all of my things are on the front doorstep because I told the guy no,” she said. Natalie Strong, 31, grew up in Lancaster and watched her parents lose their home when she was 16, just like their parents before them. Her dog would roam the yard, her mother would paint, her father would lean against the pillar on their porch, and teenage Strong would look out of her bedroom window and imagine that she was looking down on the highway from a condo in the big city. She now owns her own townhouse near Fair Park.
“I am just grateful,” Strong said. “They actually care. They actually care about people. They actually care about the places that you decide to live in. They care about the homeless, and they really have a heart, a real, true heart.”
