Scottie Smith II discovered South Dallas by accident about seven years ago after taking a wrong turn on Malcolm X Boulevard when he left his office in Deep...
“I just started buying up as much of the land that I could get my hands on,” Smith said. “I think that market-rate and affordable [homes] can coexist together, and that’s been my mission ever since. With things like that, just good development around South Dallas, it really helps to move the community.”
He has the site under contract and expects to close in late May or early June. He’ll use city funding approved in April that includes a $450,000 loan and a $200,000 grant. Founded in 2011, Smith’s company includes brokerage Scottie Smith & Associates Real Estate Advisors, Phoenician Development Group and Phoenician Construction Group. His six-agent brokerage accounted for $20 million in sales last year in North Texas, and he plans to eventually expand to about 15 agents.
Smith said it’s not only important to increase real estate opportunities and expose people in South Dallas to the business but also for people to see a thriving, functioning real estate office in the community where they can sit down for a meal or coffee. The real estate training center will train people at little to no cost in sales, mortgage origination, appraisals, inspection, development and construction.
