Bali authorities were tipped off by members of the public before raiding the hotel of a South Australian man who was charged with drug offences, a court has heard. Troy Smith, 49, left a rehabilitation centre in Denpasar before appearing in a local court for the first time on Thursday after being arrested in May. He was initially charged with drug trafficking and possession when 3g of meth was found in a parcel addressed to him and a smaller amount of meth found in his hotel.
Smith’s lawyers argued the 49-year-old is a drug user that should continue to do time in a rehabilitation centre rather than prison. Lawyer Ida Bagus Gumiland Galih Sakti said he hopes Smith will be home in a matter of months. Smith has enlisted the help of former police officer turned private consultant, John Mcleod, who has worked on other high-profile drug cases in Bali. McLeod successfully had Smith transferred from a police cell to rehabilitation as he awaits the outcome of his court case.
