After routing Northwestern State, Jaguars open Sun Belt play at Appalachian State
South Alabama plays its second straight Thursday night game this week, once again vs. an opponent with “State” in its name and representing a school that is not named after a state.
“… This game is gonna have some ebb and flows. There’s gonna be a lot of emotion. It’s a night game, it’s the first conference game. We need to play with poise and go execute. We have to understand, there’s gonna be highs and lows in any football game, but it’s a Sun Belt game, highly competitive. … I’m just excited to see our team get an opportunity to go up there.”
“It will be a great environment, as we know from the last time we went up to Boone,” defensive coordinator Will Windham said. “They’re going to challenge us from a physical standpoint, so we’ve practiced physical this week. It will be a fun college football atmosphere and I think that will bring some energy for our guys.
Quarterback Gio Lopez returned to the lineup last week after missing the Sept. 7 loss at Ohio with turf toe, and was highly efficient in 2 ½ quarters of action. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns before giving way to backup quarterback Bishop Davenport — who had started vs. Ohio — midway through the third quarter.
