Gio Lopez returns after missing first scrimmage with minor injury
After rushing for better than 250 yards in its first scrimmage of preseason camp last week, South Alabama kept the ball mostly in the air in Scrimmage No. 2 on Saturday morning at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
The South Alabama offense accounted for four touchdowns, though two first-team drives were intentionally cut short by coaches once they reached the red zone. Second-team quarterback Bishop Davenport threw two touchdowns and third-team quarterback Jared Hollins one, with Kentrel Bullock running one yard for the other score.
“I thought he made smart decisions. He threw it away when he needed to throw it away and he extended plays when he needed to extend plays. I’m very confident with where he is right now.” “We were flying around today,” defensive lineman Carlos Johnson said. “It was a slow start, but I think we got it together on defense, locked in — especially once they got in the red zone. Ones and twos, we were flying around. I can’t reiterate that enough.
The Jaguars scored on each of their final two red zone attempts, first on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Davenport to freshman running back Fluff Bothwell. Bullock’s 1-yard TD run capped a red zone drive led by Lopez, with Bullock also converting a 4th-and-1 with an 8-yard run to the 8.
