The South African rand fell on Wednesday after September headline consumer inflation rose sharply in Africa's most industrialised economy.
It was still within the South African Reserve Bank's target range of 3% to 6%, but above its desired midpoint of that range.
Separately, South African retail sales fell 0.5% year on year in August after declining by a revised 1.0% in July, statistics agency figures showed.
