A South African court has overturned the decision by electoral authorities to bar former president Jacob Zuma from running in the upcoming general elections due to a previous conviction. The court ruling paves the way for Zuma to run as a candidate for the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party.

South Africa ’s Electoral Court rules that former President Jacob Zuma can run for office as a lawmaker in the upcoming election, paving the way for him to run for president on behalf of the new uMkhonto weSizwe Party. The Independent Electoral Commission had earlier ruled that Zuma could not run for office due to his criminal record, after it received an objection against his candidature.

The electoral court on Tuesday ruled in favour of Zuma, 81, who is fronting uMkhonto we Sizwe , a new opposition party that has become a dark horse in the election race. This could precipitate the ANC towards its worst result in three decades, seeing it drop below 50 percent of the vote, short of a parliamentary majority.
