JOHANNESBURG—South African authorities have brought charges of terrorism and other crimes against a man in connection with theOn Tuesday, South African prosecutors charged 49-year-old Zandile Christmas Mafe, whom police arrested on Jan. 2, the day a major fire devastated the parliament. They charged him with terrorism, two counts of arson and possession of an explosive device, among others.
A court in Cape Town ruled Tuesday that Mr. Mafe, who is homeless, be admitted to a psychiatric facility for 30 days for observation, after the defense said Mr. Mafe suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. Until space is available for him at state psychiatric facility Valkenburg Hospital, he will remain in custody in prison. The next hearing on Mr. Mafe’s case will take place next month.
During a court appearance Tuesday, Mr. Mafe shook his head continuously and said that he would go on hunger strike if he was held in custody any longer.
