Around 200 countries and thousands of athletes are expected to take part in the Paris Olympics

The current South African indoor 3 000 m record holder Elroy Gelant, who has recently crowned the South African national under 21km champion, will be one of only two South African men who will represent South Africa in the marathon.Gelant says he is well prepared to wave the South African flag on the running tracks in Paris. “I’m ready. If I look at the past eight months, you know, I’ve got some stellar performances so that actually laid the foundation for me.
Another athlete who will represent South Africa in Paris is javelin thrower, 26-year-old Jo-Anè Van Dyk. Van Dyk was crowned the champion at the African Championships held in Cameroon, last month after having received the same title in 2022, in Mauritius. She, too, is confident that she is well prepared. “I am the most prepared that I have ever been in my life. I think our preparations are very very good. Also here in Potchefstroom, I am preparing with my coach, Tertius Liebenberg, and we will be heading to Montpellier in a week’s time to do our pre-camp there and then go to the village by 5th August but preparations are going well.
