South African Minister Ronald Lamola will lead a delegation to Mozambique to discuss the political crisis following disputed elections. Meanwhile, insurance experts advise South Africans to reconsider travel plans to Mozambique due to the unrest.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola is set to lead a delegation of South Africa n ministers to meet with their Mozambican counterparts on Wednesday in Mpumalanga. Mozambique is experiencing a political crisis following the disputed 9th October elections. Lamola will be joined by his counterparts from Defence, Trade, Industry and Competition, Police, Transport and Home Affairs. The Mozambican delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Veronica Dhlovo.
The pressure is mounting in Mozambique as the countdown begins for the Constitutional Council to make pronouncement on October 9th elections. Recently, during the Angolan President Joao Lourenco’s state visit the issue featured high on the agenda. Meanwhile, opposition parties say they are monitoring events especially ahead of 23 December when the Constitutional Council will address the nation.Insurance experts have cautioned South African holidaymakers to avoid destinations flagged by travel advisories as high risk and to ensure their travel insurance policy is updated. This comes as travellers to Mozambique have been warned to be vigilant due to sporadic violent protests. South African travellers make up the lion’s share of tourists to Mozambique during the festive season. An insurance expert Christelle Colman says travellers are advised to either postpone or cancel visiting such areas as risks in areas that are seen as dangerous may not be covered. “Insurers will not pay out claims arising from war or political unrest. Now you might ask, well, we had political unrest in July two years ago in KZN and extensively in other parts of the country, those claims were paid up.” Colman explains, ” Because in South Africa, we have SASRIA, a government-owned insurance company that covers such claims.
