The South African government is launching a program to create 10,000 government internships for labour inspectors, with plans to recruit a total of 20,000 interns over two years. The initiative aims to strengthen the Department of Employment and Labour's capacity to enforce labour laws and promote fair working conditions across various sectors.

The South African government, through the Department of Employment and Labour, is gearing up to launch an ambitious internship program that will offer 10,000 new opportunities at the end of January 2025. This initiative is part of a larger two-year plan to recruit a total of 20,000 intern labour inspectors. Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, emphasized the critical role these interns will play in bolstering the department's capacity to enforce labour laws effectively.

\ The recruitment drive for the first 10,000 posts will commence at the end of January 2025, with the remaining 10,000 positions expected to be advertised in early 2026. The Minister stated that these additional labour inspectors are essential to strengthen the department's ability to fulfill its mandate, particularly in sectors that are currently under-monitored, such as domestic work, agriculture, the public sector, and the information economy. \Labour inspectors are responsible for visiting various workplaces across the country to ensure that employers are adhering to labour laws and regulations. They also verify that workers are compensated fairly and investigate any alleged violations of labour laws. Minister Meth stressed the importance of proactive enforcement measures to deter unlawful practices. She highlighted that the increased activities of the department's inspection and enforcement services are crucial for safeguarding workers' rights, promoting compliance with labour laws, and upholding ethical business practices. This initiative follows a series of government programs aimed at creating employment opportunities for young people, although past efforts have yielded mixed results. For example, Gauteng's Nasi iSpani program, which promised monthly stipends and reskilling opportunities for 500,000 unemployed individuals, faced criticism due to inconsistencies in the implementation and delivery of promised benefits
