South Africa’s next electricity crisis hurting mobile networks

Vodacom says that, despite the reprieve from load-shedding, it still burns diesel in generators to keep its network online.

With South Africa’s long-lasting reprieve from load-shedding, mobile network operators in the country are slashing their diesel bills as they don’t need to run generators as often to provide power.

This has proven to be a big win for mobile network operators. However, Vodacom said other types of power cuts are still causing disruptions. “These outages are called load reductions and are typically implemented in areas of high usage caused by illegal connections, poor infrastructure or theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.”

In June 2022, MyBroadband analysed the network performance of Cell C, MTN, Rain, Telkom, and Vodacom during Stage 6 load-shedding to determine how much the rotational power cuts impact customer experience on the networks.
