The South African city of Cape Town and surrounding areas have been hit by more storms, ripping roofs off houses and causing widespread flooding.
Waves break over Sea Point's promenade in Cape Town, South Africa, Monday, July 8, 2024. City authorities say nearly 1,000 homes in informal settlements around the city have been destroyed by gale-force winds, displacing around 4,000 people with multiple cold fronts expected until at least Friday.
The City of Cape Town said its Disaster Operations Centre worked through the night to respond to calls for help from residents. JP Smith, the Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security, said the city and non-governmental organizations had already provided more than 36,000 meals and distributed 6,000 blankets to affected people in the last two days.
