When Americans return to the moon, their communication link back to Earth could once again pass through South Africa if the burgeoning spacefaring nation has its way
.
“We've actually caught quite a few illegal fishing boats off the coast of South Africa," Munsami reports. "We tracked one ship that didn't have its transponder on from South America to a port in South Africa that was loaded with drugs,” said Munsami, who previously worked in South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology as the chief science and technology representative, where he helped write the nation’s space policy.
The main driver for setting up the space program is to respond to the needs of government. That translates to addressing social issues and economic issues. From that, we have three priority areas. One is environmental resource management, the second area is health, safety and security, and the third area is innovation and economy. Those are the key thematic thrusts of the space program [and] all of the technology that we develop is to address those priorities.
