On this day three years ago, South Africa woke up under a hard lockdown after Level 5 restrictions kicked in at midnight. COVID19

was declared on the 15th of March 2020 in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus in South Africa.

The intense restrictions under Level 5 saw the closure of schools. The sale of alcohol and cigarettes was prohibited. Many other economic activities, including restaurants and hotels, could not operate. Only essential services workers were allowed to work.
