The Diamondbacks are said to be talking with the Oakland Athletics about trading for catcher Sean Murphy.
SAN DIEGO — General Manager Mike Hazen has hinted in recent days about the possibility of making unexpected moves. There are indications one such move could involve the catcher’s position.
Murphy, 28, is coming off a season in which he posted a .250/.332/.426 line and ranked among the most valuable catchers in the majors. The rebuilding Athletics are expected to deal him this winter, and with three seasons of club control remaining he has been an unsurprisingly popular target in trade conversation.
Kelly, 28, had an uneven year for the Diamondbacks, posting a .211/.282/.334 line, performing better later in the year after getting off to a miserable start. Part of the return in the Paul Goldschmidt trade, Kelly has been an up-and-down offensive performer during his four seasons with the Diamondbacks.
