The Eagles are keeping defensive back Michael Carter II on a renegotiated deal in 2026.

Dave Zangaro breaks down Jaelan Phillips’ reported new contract with the Carolina Panthers and what it means for the Eagles as NFL free agency gets underway. The Eagles are keeping veteran defensive back Michael Carter II in 2026 on a renegotiated deal, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Carter, 27, was acquired in a trade from the Jets ahead of the 2025 trade deadline and played in eight games with one start for the Eagles in the second half of the season.Despite a report that Carter II was cut and then re-signed, Carter remained on the team and simply signed a renegotiated contract. Carter II came to the Eagles under contract for the 2026 and 2027 seasons but with massive base salaries in each year. Because of that, Carter’s salary cap hit for the 2026 season was going to be over $10.1 million without a restructure. That cap hit will be lowered for this season. The Eagles acquired Carter and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Jets back on Oct. 29 for WR John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round pick ahead of the trade deadline. “I think he's a good player, good natural football player,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said during the season. “ understands the game. He's got good instincts, got good technique to his game, he's quick. We're pleased to have him.” Carter has mostly played nickel corner in his career but can also play safety. That seems notable with both Reed Blankenship and Marcus Epps hitting free agency. Carter learned both the nickel and safety in the Eagles’ defense last season.Chester County
