Constantine told the Sound Transit board of directors on Thursday that he'll be meeting with the prosecutor's office soon.

A four-car light rail vehicle crosses over I-5 on the 1 Line Link Extension to Lynnwood on the first day of full-size train testing, July 8, 2024. After a series of copper wire thefts disrupted light rail service in the last few months, Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine says he is going to ask for help from King County prosecutors to hold thieves accountable.

Constantine told the Sound Transit board of directors on Thursday that he'll be meeting with the prosecutor's office soon. We will be discussing the challenges and how we will continue to partner together," Constantine said. “We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent and manage these disruptions. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has taken the lead on lobbying lawmakers to take measures to deter thefts, would have added a requirement for scrap purchasers to upload photos of the metal they buy to a searchable database and give police the ability to seize stolen wires that have been purchased.Meanwhile, Sound Transit officials say thieves are getting more brazen, including a recent case where someone stole wires from the train line while trains were actively running on it.I cannot express to you how dangerous that is," said Sound Transit spokesperson Henry Bendon. “The trains do 55 mph, they are 400 feet long, they cannot stop. Many of the thefts have impacted the newly-opened 1 Line extension between the Angle Lake station in SeaTac and the Federal Way Downtown station. Sound Transit has responded to thefts by bolstering security with the addition of protective barriers, additional cameras, security patrols, and plainclothes police officers watching vulnerable areas.“It’s unacceptable, and we are doing everything and more to stop it," Bendon said. “This is an infrastructure investment we have made as a region. This is an expensive project; it has a ton of upsides. These people that are stealing copper wire, they are vandalizing the network, they are interrupting people’s lives, and they are also at risk not just of prosecution, but of getting hurt, so don’t do it.”A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the killing of his mother after deputies found her dead inside an Auburn condominium. As a precaution, Public Health is recommending that about 130 people associated with the school be evaluated for TB.New data shows the state of Washington is still struggling to attract and retain police officers.Rep.
