Sam Moore, one half of the legendary soul duo Sam & Dave, best known for their hit songs 'Soul Man' and 'Hold On, I’m Comin',' has passed away at the age of 89.

Sam Moore , one half of the iconic 1960s soul duo Sam & Dave , known for hits like ' Soul Man ' and ' Hold On , I’m Comin',' has passed away at the age of 89. His publicist confirmed his death to the Associated Press on Friday, stating that Moore died in Coral Gables, Florida due to complications arising from surgery. Moore, a 1992 Rock Hall of Fame inductee, significantly influenced musicians such as Michael Jackson, Al Green, and Bruce Springsteen.

Moore and his partner, Prater, were prominent figures in the Memphis-based Stax Records scene, second only to Otis Redding in popularity. They transformed the 'call and response' of gospel music into an electrifying stage show, leaving behind a legacy of soul music's most enduring hits, including 'You Don’t Know Like I Know,' 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby,' and 'I Thank You.' While Sam & Dave's fame declined after the 1960s, 'Soul Man' experienced a resurgence in the late 1970s thanks to the Blues Brothers, John Belushi, and Dan Aykroyd, who recorded a version with many of the original musicians. Moore had mixed feelings about this, remembering how younger generations came to believe the song originated with the Blues Brothers. Moore was involved in numerous legal battles throughout his career. He sued over the film 'Soul Men,' which drew heavily on the Sam & Dave persona, and for years engaged in a dispute with Prater after Prater formed 'New Sam & Dave' with a replacement singer. Prater died in a car accident in 1988. Moore also took legal action against the record industry, alleging that he had been denied rightful retirement benefits. He actively participated in a lawsuit against several record companies and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in 1993. In 1996, Moore penned 'Dole Man,' a song inspired by 'Soul Man,' for Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole's campaign. In 2017, he performed at Republican President Donald Trump's inauguration, while eight years prior, he had objected to the use of 'Hold On, I’m Comin’' in Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign. Moore, born on October 12, 1935, in Miami, began his musical journey singing in church. He and Prater performed in soul and R&B clubs in the 1950s before finally meeting in Miami in 1961. Their partnership blossomed after Moore helped Prater with the lyrics of a song, quickly establishing themselves as a popular local duo. In 1965, they signed with Atlantic Records and were sent to the Stax subsidiary in Memphis. Despite their success, Moore and Prater often clashed, with Moore attributing their struggles to a drug habit he overcame in 1981. The duo disbanded in 1970, and neither achieved another major hit. Moore continued to record and perform, becoming a frequent guest at the Kennedy Center Honors and entertaining presidents, including Obama. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, daughter, Michell, and two grandchildren
