Garcia begins her 24th year at O’Connor as the only coach in Panthers history. Williams has been the coach at Brandeis since the school opened in 2008.“That’s what I wanted,” she said. “Look, is still the only coach in O’Connor history. I want to retire from Sotomayor. I want that to be my career. I want to build a respectable program just as they have.
In January 2016, she began working as a brand manager for an advertising agency in the Dallas area. Essentially, Morris was the go-between for clients and the agency’s art directors as they put together advertising campaigns. There, she honed her organizational and negotiation skills with million-dollar deals at stake.
Morris left advertising in May 2018 and earned a teaching certificate. In October 2018, she was hired as coach and math teacher at Young Women’s STEAM Academy, an all-girls middle school in Dallas ISD. “I didn’t have to worry that not one minute and not one day because Sarah did it on her own,” Garcia said. “I had to treat her exactly like the others. It made me a better coach. Those moments were tough, but in a good way.”
They made the decision to have Sarah pursue the opening at Brandeis. In 2020, she was hired as an assistant at Brandeis, her first high school coaching post. Ninfa Garcia coached volleyball at Harlandale from 1980 to 1989. Yami, who graduated in 1987, played under her. Denise was her drill team coach at Harlandale.
