Sotomayor is set to open for classes on Aug. 22. By then, volleyball season will be underway, and football starts the following week.

A Sotomayor football player finds the new pads and helmets are ready to be picked up by players at the newest school in Northside ISD. It’s one of four new area high schools teams competing at the varsity level this season. On the first day of sports at Sotomayor — Northside ISD’s newest high school — construction workers milled around the athletic area early Monday morning putting finishing touches to the campus. Most the Wildcats’ volleyball players had shown up well before the 7 a.m.

“We are getting a lot of new opportunities that not a lot of other teams get,” junior outside hitter Alissa Gregory-Obiedo said. “We get to practice in a new gym that no one has ever practiced in before. We get to make history. We get to start something new and create traditions that will carry on for a lifetime.”

Morris conducted her first practice as a head coach. She served as an assistant at Brandeis the previous two seasons and was on the staff when the Broncos won last year’s Class 6A’s state championship. Morris is a former O’Connor standout who played for her aunt, Yami Garcia, who is still with the Panthers.“I was able to spend a lot of time with the girls in the summer to set the foundation on what the expectations are,” Morris said. “I was super-excited to see how that transferred immediately.

“The connections we have, we feel more comfortable with each other, so our communication will be good,” Almaguer said. “We’ve never been here before. This is our first time practicing, and it’s exciting because it’s in the new gym. We get to meet people who didn’t come from Harlan that we hadn’t known.”

“That’s going to bring a lot of challenges,” junior defensive back Jordan Daniels said. “We have a lot younger guys on our team, so hopefully, we’ll be able to push through that. I feel like we’ll be a solid team in our district.”
