The Wildcats hit clutch free throws late to hold off a rally from Stevens and build confidence heading into Christmas break.
The time spent working on free throw shooting in practice paid off for the Sotomayor Wildcats on Friday as they made crucial free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Stevens Falcons 61-52 in a District 28-6A game at Harlan District Gym . Sotomayor made 10 of 12 attempts from the charity stripe in the final quarter as the Wildcats outscored Stevens 15-9 in the frame to win its fourth straight district contest.
A four-point play by Cesar Roman, who was fouled on a three, brought the Falcons with 59-52 with 39.8 seconds remaining, before Michael Inweh closed out the game with two free throws for Sotomayor. Sotomayor jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter and ended the frame up 20-15, with Demian Joyner, scoring 10 of his 17 points in the period for the Wildcats.
