Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh has travelled to Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife in the first trip to the country by a British royal since the conflict with Russia began.
The Duchess of Edinburgh has become the first senior member of the royal family to visit Ukraine since the 2022 Russian invasion and expressed solidarity to the nation on behalf of King Charles.
In newly released photos from the historic visit Sophie is seen meeting with President Zelenskyy and his wife First Lady Olena Zelenska and meeting with men, women and children directly impacted by the deadly conflict. Later in the day Sophie toured Bucha, a town near Kyiv where Russian forces are accused of committing war crimes including executions and rapes before it was recaptured by Ukrainian forces two years ago.
The plight of women and girls facing sexual violence in conflict is a cause championed by the Duchess of Edinburgh and a key focus for her royal duties.
