Sony unveiled a suite of cutting-edge technologies at CES 2023, focusing on the convergence of creativity and technology. Highlights include XYN, a groundbreaking 3D creation headset, and PXO AKIRA, a revolutionary vehicle filming system.
At its CES press conference on January 6, Sony showcased a range of new products and approaches rooted in its vision to foster synergy between creativity and technology. Among these are XYN, a pioneering headset for creating 3D objects, a new vehicle filming system, and tech to improve sports fans’ experience.Thaisa Yamamura, head of XR Business Development at Sony Electronics in the US, introduced XYN – a new 3D CG production solution for various creators.
XYN’s spatial capture employs a mirrorless camera, converting real objects and spaces into high-quality 3D objects. Sony’s algorithm is specifically optimized to improve generation time. Yamamura described XYN as an “integrative software and hardware solution that enables creators to capture and reproduce the real world into their artwork with stunning fidelity” for use in films, games, and animation. The XYN motion studio app allows creators to edit motion data with “tweeting” capacity or connect multiple data points. Motion capture accuracy is improved through a 12-sensor connection for the mobile motion capture system Mocopi. An enhanced reality XYN headset is also being developed. It supports spatial content creation and is compatible with third-party content creation tools. Yotis Katsambas, VP of Technology for Sony Pictures Animation, describes the transformation possibilities of this tech, seeing it as an amazing improvement in generating 3D objects.CEO of Pixomondo, Jonny Slow, showcased PXO AKIRA, the “ultimate vehicle processing system” that allows for filming with various vehicles in any setting. The system features a motion-based platform that can handle anything from cars to spaceships. It also has a camera crane with programmable camera moves.
