I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
Despite having a successful VR headset with the original PS VR, the market seems to have shifted under Sony’s feet after they crafted follow-up hardware.Sony has reportedly produced two million units of PS VR2, but shipments have been declining since its launch in February 2023. PlayStation 5 has sold 50 million units as of December 2023, despite two years of supply shortaqges.
A problem Bloomberg cites is an obvious one, a lack of compelling content for the system with only a handful of larger games like Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Gran Turismo 7. It also costs more than an entire PS5 console, which is a hard sell to most gamers. Recently, Sony laid off workers who were making PS VR games, indicating that the hardware may get even less support in the future. Perhaps that Sony is even starting to just cut their losses with the hardware.
Sony may be about to reach an answer. If PS VR2 performs worse than the original system, it’s unclear why they should bother continuing down this road, something its rivals Nintendo and Microsoft have avoided. VR systems remain a bulky, somewhat exhausting way to play games that are generally speaking, lesser in quality than traditional console and PC games, with very few exceptions.
I do not see Sony staying in the VR market for too much longer, and it would seem unwise to now pursue a PS VR3 after all this, but we’ll see.
