Details are sparse, but the electric SUV will be the second car in the Sony Honda Mobility portfolio.
electric sedan/hatchback, SHM just unveiled a surprise second car in its EV portfolio at a CES press conference on Monday. The yet-unnamed model for now is called the Afeela Prototype 2026 and appears to be a fastback SHM says the Afeela Prototype 2026 takes all the innovations from its first vehicle, the Afeela 1—and, presumably, its platform andsoftware/electrical architectures—but offers more accessibility and space due to its body style, thus potentially appealing to more customers.
As a reminder, the core idea behind the Afeela 1 is to turn the driving experience for both the driver and passengers into a next-generation and tech-forward experience, so expect anNo further information whatsoever about the Prototype 2026 was made available, other than SHM planning to launch the production version of the model in the U.S. market in 2028.The move follows in the typical EV launch playbook, which is to kick things off with a lower-volume sedan/hatchback/truck model, and scale up with a more mass-appeal SUV. It’s something Tesla, Porsche, Rivian, and Lucid have all done. Reservation books for the Afeela 1 opened this month in California, with deliveries to those customers slated to start in 2026. Demonstration drives should be offered to reservation holders late this year, most likely out of the yet-to-be-opened “Afeela Studio and Delivery Hubs” in Torrance and Fremont, California. After that, SHM plans to expand future sales and deliveries to Arizona in 2027. Japanese deliveries should begin in the first half of next year as well. There’s no telling when the rest of the country can expect the cars. This is a fairly aggressive timeline for a car no one’s really seen away from an SHM press stage, let alone driven, so we’re skeptical the brand can achieve everything it says it will. This is also to say nothing of the Still, these are new cars from a new brand, so we’ll reserve our true judgment for when we finally get some to try out ourselves. With Honda as a backer, a company that is very good at building cars, we’re fairly confidentwill appear. We just don’t know when for sure, and how it’ll be to drive and own. Stay tuned.I got into cars the way most people do: my dad. Since I was little, it was always something we’d talk about and I think he was stoked to have his kid share his interest. He’d buy me the books, magazines, calendars, and diecast models—everything he could do to encourage a young enthusiast. Eventually, I went to school and got to the point where people start asking you what you want to do with your life. Seeing as cars are what I love and writing is what I enjoy doing, combining the two was the logical next step. This dream job is the only one I’ve ever wanted. Since then, I’ve worked at Road & Track, Jalopnik, Business Insider, The Drive, and now MotorTrend, and made appearances on Jay Leno’s Garage, Good Morning America, The Smoking Tire Podcast, Fusion’s Car vs. America, the Ask a Clean Person podcast, and MotorTrend’s Shift Talkers. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching the Fast & Furious movies on repeat. Tokyo Drift is the best one.
