Sonos launches its first speaker designed for professional installations, the Era 100 Pro. This Ethernet-powered speaker is sold in pairs and requires PoE connectivity. Sonos also introduces the 'zones' feature, allowing users to manage and synchronize groups of up to 16 compatible speakers.
Sonos announces the availability of the Era 100 Pro , its first speaker specifically designed for professional installations. This new speaker, which requires both power and network connectivity via an Ethernet cable, is sold exclusively in pairs through select Sonos partners specializing in professional installation. Pricing for the Era 100 Pro is determined by these partners and Sonos hasn't provided any official guidance.
Notably, the Era 100 Pro necessitates a powered (PoE) Ethernet connection, meaning it won't function with a typical home network without additional components. To accompany the launch of the Era 100 Pro, Sonos introduces a new feature called 'zones' within its app. Zones function similarly to the existing 'groups' feature, allowing users to create a 'semi-permanent' collection of up to 16 compatible Sonos devices that play the same content at synchronized volume levels. Individual speaker volume can be adjusted within a zone, and EQ can be customized on a per-speaker basis. Zones offer flexibility as they can be grouped with other zones or individual Sonos components, providing a more refined management system than the previous 'groups' structure. The Sonos app allows users to easily add, edit, or remove zones. Furthermore, a chime feature aids in identifying specific speakers within a zone when visual cues are insufficient. However, zones have limitations in terms of compatibility, working only with select Sonos components like the Era 100 Pro, Era 100, Era 300, Sonos One SL, Sonos One (all generations), and Sonos Five. Ethernet connectivity is strongly recommended for all speakers within a zone, and if not feasible, limiting zones to a maximum of six Wi-Fi-connected devices is suggested for optimal performance. Alongside these features, the Sonos app also receives ongoing updates and fixes to address issues arising from the May 2024 redesign launch.
